Hay should make up the bulk of what your rabbit eats every single day — not an occasional extra, the main event. A rabbit with unlimited access to fresh grass hay is a rabbit whose digestion and teeth are being looked after properly.
Which hay suits a rabbit
Timothy and orchard grass hay are the everyday staples for an adult rabbit — both are high-fibre, lower-calcium options that suit a full-time diet. Alfalfa hay is richer in calcium and protein, which makes it better suited to young, growing, pregnant or nursing rabbits rather than a healthy adult’s everyday hay.
How much, and how often
Effectively unlimited, refreshed daily. A useful rule of thumb many owners use is offering a pile roughly the size of the rabbit itself — but the real target is simply “always available,” not a precise measured amount.
Spotting good hay
Fresh hay smells sweet and grassy, not musty or dusty, and should be green-toned rather than yellow/brown throughout. If your rabbit is turning their nose up at a batch, it’s often worth trying a fresher one or a different cutting before assuming they simply dislike hay.
For anything specific to your rabbit — a health condition, a picky eater, a diet change — it’s worth checking with an exotic-animal-savvy vet.
