Just like rabbits, guinea pigs need unlimited fresh grass hay available at all times — it supports digestion and keeps their continuously-growing teeth worn down properly. It’s the single most important part of their diet, alongside a daily source of vitamin C.
Which hay suits a guinea pig
Timothy or orchard hay are the everyday staples for an adult guinea pig — high fibre, suited to full-time feeding. Alfalfa is better reserved for young or pregnant/nursing guinea pigs rather than an adult’s everyday hay, given its higher calcium content.
How much
Effectively unlimited, refreshed daily — a guinea pig should always have fresh hay within reach, not a measured daily ration the way pellets are.
A note on freshness
Guinea pigs can be pickier about hay quality than rabbits — musty, dusty, or overly dry hay is often left untouched. Buying smaller quantities more often, and storing in a breathable container away from humidity, keeps it appealing.
For anything specific to your guinea pig — a health condition, a picky eater — it’s worth checking with an exotic-animal-savvy vet.
